UPCARGO LOGISTICS, representing Panama in the Project Logistics Alliance, has recently demonstrated the daily challenges faced in the logistics field, particularly when unexpected changes occur. This case study highlights the importance of planning and showcases a professional team's capability in handling challenges and completing shipments successfully.
During a recent shipment, UPCARGO LOGISTICS encountered a significant disruption in the logistics chain when the port of discharge was changed. Initially, the route was set from the Port of Shanghai, China, to the Port of Balboa, Panama. However, the flatracks were redirected to the Port of Manzanillo, Colon, located approximately 80 kilometres away from Balboa. The team only learned of this change a day after the cargo's arrival at the Manzanillo terminal.

The unexpected change in POD resulted in several challenges, including increased transportation costs for the client, extra costs for road adjustments, and additional route studies. Moreover, the team had to address the following issues:
Longer travel distance: The increased distance meant more potential obstacles. A route study revealed that the shipment would not be able to pass through one of the toll booths on the northern corridor. The solution was to remove roadway jerseys to bypass the toll.
Adjustments with time constraints: While UPCARGO LOGISTICS has managed time adjustments before, this shipment was particularly challenging due to tight delivery schedules. With multiple suppliers involved, any delay could result in additional costs, which the team aimed to minimize for their clients.
Rapid permitting requirements: The team efficiently obtained the necessary permits and approvals to remove the jerseys, secured a traffic police unit assignment, and managed port operations in record time.
Proactive measures: The team took advanced steps by scheduling port appointments and inspections in anticipation of potential challenges.

The cargo was successfully removed from the terminal, with UPCARGO's scope of work including:

The thorough studies and route evaluations from the Balboa terminal to the delivery point, just 40 kilometres away, proved highly effective, requiring no route adjustments. The team simply needed to wait for the cargo and load it onto the transport vehicles.
Through this shipment, UPCARGO LOGISTICS achieved successful transfer, minimized extra costs, and ensured client satisfaction.
While UPCARGO faces multiple challenges and last-minute changes in their daily operations, these challenges drive the company to find concrete solutions for their clients and strategic partners. UPCARGO's primary commitment is to manage logistics fairly and preventively, ensuring they meet their clients' needs effectively and efficiently. We at the Project Logistics Alliance commend this commitment. Congratulations on your recent success, team UPCARGO LOGISTICS!
