Mastering Precision and Innovation: Eastship's 2024 Success in Transporting 46 High Voltage Transformers

Eastship Projects & Logistics SRL, a member of the Project Logistics Alliance representing Romania, has successfully transported 46 High Voltage Transformers (HVTs) across Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine throughout 2024. These shipments faced different challenges, which required Eastship Projects & Logistics to provide tailored solutions in order to achieve satisfactory results.

The transported HVTs, vital to the region’s power grid and crucial for supplying electricity to local communities, ranged in weight from 140 to 270 tonnes and were moved over distances of up to 1,700 kilometres.

While some HVTs were positioned using cranes, many required the expertise of Eastship’s on-site logistics team and the precision of the jacking and skidding method. This technique allowed the team to carefully and safely manoeuvre the massive equipment into tight, challenging spaces, ensuring smooth and efficient installations.

With precision and innovation at the core of these operations, the Eastship Projects & Logistics team faced a range of challenges, particularly when navigating complex and damaged infrastructure in certain areas of Ukraine. To ensure safety and efficiency, the team used up to seven modular extra axles, enabling the operations to continue.

In addition to overcoming a road closure and last-minute route changes, the Eastship Projects & Logistics team also managed a difficult site challenge. In one case, a mounting site was 50 cm higher than the surrounding ground level, preventing the use of the jacking and skidding method. Furthermore, the high-voltage cables in the area and the tight spaces eliminated the use of cranes as an option. The Eastship Projects & Logistics team adapted quickly, placing the mounting rails using specialized supports designed to bear the heavy weight of the HVTs.

Transporting and placing HVTs has always been at the heart of Eastship Projects & Logistics, and the recent investments in the company’s fleet reflect a commitment to tackling demanding projects across the region.
