Mali Allowed to Re-Open Borders! Economic Community of Western Africa Lift Economic and Financial Sanctions on Mali

The Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) has lifted Mali's economic and financial sanctions. The sanctions were initially imposed after the Military Junta leader refused to hold elections in February. After a proposed 24-month transition period to democracy, the Western African heads of state met in Ghana's capital, Accra, over the weekend and announced opening borders in Mali.

The regional diplomats would also return to Bamako. With the immediate lift of sanctions, the regular trade routes between Dakar to Kayes and Bamako and from Abidjan to Bamako, Sikasso and Koutiala will re-open.

Due to its strategic location, Dakar port is the natural hub to serve Mali.
