JSL Global, representing Qatar in the Project Logistics Alliance, has effectively handled a single lot of 28x40' FR (OOG) totaling 2551 CBM, consisting of excavators and construction equipment from the Hamad Port, Qatar.
JSL Global’s project division coordinated the entire process, including the pre-survey, cargo loading, lashing and securing, police escort, and traffic approvals for the convoy, and managed customs and traffic department formalities and transportation at the destination in the Southeast Asian port. The shipment consisted of a crawler backhoe, a forklift, breaker units for excavators, and cargo crane trucks. The equipment width ranged from 4.86 to 4.94 meters and excavators weighed between 32 and 34 metric tons.

The main challenge was delivering the cargo to the specific receiving port, as most container vessel operators refused to handle the shipment due to the port’s capacity and the cargo’s width of 4.94 meters. Additionally, the cargo needed to be shipped as a single lot, consisting of 28 x 40’ flat racks (OOG) totaling 2,551 CBM, because of the customs restrictions at the receiving port. Apart from the flat rack movements, JSL handled 3 Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) units, totaling 330.80 CBM.

Moreover, given the excavator’s footprint in relation to its weight, safe loading, lashing, and transporting, it presented its own challenges. The JSL Global team, together with the surveyor and shipping line, worked collaboratively to devise an optimal solution that maximized weight distribution. Mr. Rakesh Barai, Ops Head - Projects at JSL Global, elaborates that when handling OOG cargo, especially heavy cargo, one must carefully consider cargo lashing and cargo placement and that cargo should be positioned on the flat rack to ensure suitable weight distribution, both along the length and the width so that the main area of gravity is not too far off-center.

The successful completion of this OOG shipment, despite the presented challenges, serve as an example of the team JSL Global team’s professionalism. The meticulous planning and commitment to providing comprehensive solutions were demonstrated through every step. Well done, team JSL Global!
